Pickwick Party Time

Congratulations to Pickwick Youth Lions under 11s on winning the Division A title of the South Hants Glass Portsmouth Youth Football League, with an impressive record of P12-W11-L1-F65-A8 and a total of 33 points. Their Manager Zhoura Blakeman, who has been with the team since it was originally formed said ‘ This season has been a great learning experience for all concerned with the step up from mini-soccer to 11 aside football presenting new challenges for the boys and coaches to deal with. The consistent high level of match performance the team have achieved this season and the progress they have shown has been down to them meeting these challenges with a combination of hard work and a desire and hunger to succeed whilst at the same time having fun and enjoyment. Each member of the squad has contributed to the success of the side and there is great bond between the players on and off the field. My aim now is to look ahead to next season and continue the long term goal of helping the players fulfill their potential as a team and as individuals’.

Why Pickwick ?

By achieving the FA Charter
Standard Club Award, we have
demonstrated to all members,
parents and the public, that we are
a well-organised, safe club offering
opportunities for all. For each team we have at least 1 coach that has qualified to Fa level 1 , immediate first Aid , and some teams to Level 2 and all assistants are CRB Checked .Pickwick support and have coaches that have completed the FA Youth Award Module 1 and 2 .These are the first course that looks at the child and where they are developmentally (separated in four areas - physical, psychological, technical and social aspects) and then packages football through a number of exciting new activities in such a way that it "fits" the child and not the other way round.
We start with 4-6 yr olds in our Nursery academy. Then from under 7-under 10 you can participate in Mini soccer each weekend in an organised league. From Under 11-under 18 full 11 a side football each week in the South Hants Glass League. Started in 2010 Pickwick United (consisting mainly of last years Under 18 team)who play in the City of Portsmouth Mens Sunday League.
We have 28 teams ranging from 4yr olds to Mens making sure everyone has a chance to be involved in football, regardless of ability, race, religion or background. In most age groups we have several teams of differing abilities so if you are 10 and have been playing since you where 4 or have just decided to take up with a club we should have a team that will help. If we haven't and do not have enough to start another team ,then with a vast network of contacts we will point you towards another club in the local area that could help.
We Want You Whether you have played for a team in a league or at school, are attending soccer skills schools or just like kicking the ball about in the park. We Want You If you are willing to learn , enjoy meeting new friends and want to have fun improving your skills in a team environment. We Want You If you want to feel excitement by being in the right position making that fantastic save in a match that you learned how to do in training the week before. We Want You if you want to play a through ball like Steven Gerard , cross a ball like Liam Lawrence ,or dribble and score like Messi. Or if you just want to be healthy, keep fit , and meet new friends We Want You.
Our teams train at several locations throughout Portsmouth so please click here for more information. We Want You If you want to start a team or Volunteer to help one of our teams please click HERE and fill in the contact form . Play Up Pickwick
Get Involved
Have you ever thought about taking up the challenge of running a youth football team? Pickwick Youth Football Club is always on the look out for enthusiastic volunteers who have a love for football, have good communication with young players and can spare approx 3-5 hours a week. An ideal candidate will be:
- focused on player development

- able to work well and communicate with children
- identify player strengths/weaknesses and address these in a structured, friendly way
- promote team work and social interaction
- will NOT be driven by results, especially in the younger age groups
- teach their team to accept winning and losing in the same gracious manner
- subject to a CRB check
Each team needs at least a couple of volunteers in order to run smoothly and these are typically a manager and a coach/assistant. A managers role includes coaching the team, planning training sessions, dealing with basic parent issues, registering players, filling in match results cards, confirming match details with other teams, organising referee's for home games and setting up pitch facilities for home games. In contrast the coach is there to support the manager, assist in planning training sessions and take responsibility for developing the players.
No team can exist without at least a manager and we understand the importance of providing the correct training and support to help any volunteer to carry out this role. To this end we will ensure any manager is offered an FA Level 1 coaching badge course, sessions provided by the FA, Head Coach support for footballing matters and Committee support for anything else. If any additional help or training is required then there will always be someone around to assist.
Sometimes the role of a manager is a thankless task but when you see your team out on the park ENJOYING their football then that is thanks enough.
If you feel you can take on this challenge or maybe help in any other way then please contact us by clicking Here
More Coaches commit to the FA Youth Award
The FA Youth Award is the very latest in youth coaching innovation. This new course encourages coaches to understand as much about their young players as they do about the game. As coaches, we often spend a lot of time focusing on training drills, fixtures and match days . Wouldn't it be great if we stepped back from all that and looked at each of our young players individually.
Well done to Vinny and Steve our first coaches achieving the 4 day Module 1 award, and Well done to Nick Hughes Under 10B coach who has also just completed the next stage 4 day Module 2 Award .Want to know more click here
